Klimt's The Kiss and the Upper Belvedere collection

The Belvedere describes its Klimt collection as the largest in the world. Its best-known works are The Kiss (Lovers), painted around 1907 to 1908 in oil and gold leaf on a canvas of 180 by 180 centimetres, and Judith. The Moderne Galerie bought The Kiss in 1908, through the imperial ministry of culture and education.

The Upper Belvedere also shows Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, French Impressionism, Viennese Biedermeier painting with Waldmüller, baroque and medieval works, and international names such as Monet, van Gogh and Max Beckmann. The permanent display is called Picture this! The Belvedere Collection from Cranach to Lassnig. Which rooms are open can change with exhibitions, so what you see on the day may vary.

The Marble Hall, the Sala Terrena and the State Treaty

The Marble Hall is the grandest room of the palace, with reddish marble, gilding and a ceiling fresco by Carlo Innocenzo Carlone from 1721 in praise of Prince Eugene. On 15 May 1955 the Austrian State Treaty was signed here, and the Belvedere's history page quotes the words "Austria is free!".

On the ground floor the Sala Terrena has four Atlantes carrying a stuccoed vault; Hildebrandt placed them after structural damage in the winter of 1732 to 1733. The Belvedere also lists the Grand Staircase, the octagonal palace chapel and the painted Carlone Hall. Tiqets lists access to the Marble Hall in the Upper Belvedere ticket; the official pages we read do not state it as a guarantee, so check on the day.

Lower Belvedere, Orangery and Palace Stables

The Lower Belvedere with its red roofs, seen from the path

Hildebrandt built the Lower Belvedere between 1712 and 1716 as Prince Eugene's residence. Its historic rooms are the two-storey Marble Hall, the Marble Gallery, the Hall of Grotesques and the Gold Cabinet. It also hosts temporary exhibitions: Erna Rosenstein runs until 10 January 2027 and Erika Giovanna Klien until 31 January 2027, according to the official site.

Next door, the Orangery is a former greenhouse that has been an exhibition space since 2007, and the Palace Stables house the gallery of medieval and Renaissance art, with the Salzburg Altar by Rueland Frueauf the Elder. They use the same ticket as the Lower Belvedere. The Lower Belvedere opens at 10:00.

    The gardens

The Upper Belvedere and the palace garden on a sunny day

The palace gardens, laid out in the French style by Dominique Girard, rise in three terraces between the Lower and the Upper Belvedere. They are free to enter and managed by the Austrian Federal Gardens, and dogs are not allowed. Opening times change by month: from 6:30 to 21:00 in summer and from 7:00 to 17:30 from November to February.

The Privy Garden is different: it is open from 10:00 to 18:00 and only with a valid ticket, through the Lower Belvedere and the Marble Gallery. The path through the park between the Upper and the Lower Belvedere is not accessible for people with reduced mobility, according to the official site.

    Belvedere 21

Belvedere 21, the museum of contemporary art, seen from the street in daylight

Belvedere 21 shows Austrian and international contemporary art, film and music in the pavilion Karl Schwanzer designed for the Brussels Expo in 1958. It is about 0.7 km from the Upper Belvedere in a straight line, in Arsenalstraße. The Blickle Kino screens films with free admission.

It is closed until 4 November 2026 while an exhibition is installed. After that it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 18:00, until 21:00 on Thursday, and on Monday only on public holidays. The sculpture garden is free.
